Knowledge Panel vs. Google My Business - what you actually need
Google My Business - now Google Business Profile - is a local location listing you create yourself and can edit at any time. The Knowledge Panel is something else: an algorithmic entity box from the Google Knowledge Graph that Google grants based on independent, consistent signals. The Business Profile brings local visibility; the panel brings identity, including in AI answers. Both can exist side by side.
What Google Business Profile is
- A local location listing with address, hours and reviews
- Created by you, set up in minutes and editable at any time
- Visible in Google Maps and local search nearby
- Built for shops, practices and businesses with a physical location
- Little influence on how AI systems talk about you
- Trust effect: standard - practically every local business has one
What the Knowledge Panel is
- An algorithmic entity box from the Google Knowledge Graph
- Granted by Google itself, based on consistent, independent signals
- Appears directly next to or above the search results - worldwide
- Covers people, brands and companies as a whole, with no location tie
- The data basis for ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Perplexity and Gemini
- Trust effect: a distinction that simply can't be bought
The practical difference
A well-maintained Business Profile answers "Where are you and when are you open?". The Knowledge Panel answers "Who are you, and why should I believe you?". That's why the panel works in recommendation and vetting moments while the local listing does not.
For AI systems the gap is even wider: language models draw on structured entity data, not opening hours. If all you have is a Business Profile, those systems often don't recognize you as a distinct person or brand at all.
Four points in favor of the panel
- Can't be bought - which is exactly why it's credible
- Double impact - convinces both people and AI systems
- Visible worldwide, not just in your local area
- Control - once verified, you steer how you're shown
What we honestly recommend
For local businesses, a well-maintained Business Profile still makes sense - it just doesn't replace a Knowledge Panel, and both can easily exist side by side.
The sensible order: keep the local listing clean and consistent, and build the entity foundation in parallel - entity home, schema, Wikidata, matching specialist databases. Only that foundation leads to a panel.
